Tryon Distributing - Our People

The Pulse Behind Tryon

Our People

At Tryon we pride ourselves on being just a little different than most other beer and wine distributors.

Executive Team

Brad Johnston

ALT

Brad was born and raised in Charlotte.  He received a Business degree from UNC-Greensboro where he met his wife, Suzan.  After several years in the restaurant industry Brad and his old college roommate Steve Hedberg put together a group of investors to purchase an eighteen-month-old business that was failing.  Brad was only 26 at the time, but even at that age he saw the potential in Tryon Distributing.

As the President of Tryon, Brad has been very active within the Craft Beer and Wine industries.  He has been a board member of the Charlotte Hospitality and Tourism Alliance as well as the North Carolina Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association.

Brad was also very active in the grassroots movement to raise the alcohol limit in beer, called ‘Pop the Cap’. He was also the Chairman of the National Craft Beer Wholesalers Symposium for several years and in 2017 was honored with the Industry Impact Award, which was awarded to him by the North Carolina Brewer’s Guild. In 2018, Brad accepted the Wholesaler of the Year Award from the National Brewers Association.

Employee Spotlight

Colin Williams

Sales Representative

Say hello to Colin, one of our Charlotte On-Premise Reps, Certified Sommelier, and newest Certified Specialist of Wine!

Colin's passion for wine began by accident back in 2013 while he had a tech job at WineAccess where he worked alongside a Master of Wine. Colin reminisces, "Five years later, when I was really sick of staring at a spreadsheet, I remembered how much I enjoyed learning about wine, and decided to jump back into it and become an expert. I remember doing some research, talking to some people in the wine world, and deciding to pursue Sommelier certification before jumping ship, to make sure I was good enough and get some reasons on paper for someone to pay me to do wine stuff."

Colin then earned his credentials as Certified Sommelier in 2018, joined our Tryon Family about a year later in 2019, and most recently earned his CSW just a few months ago.

Colin's current favorite wine to reach for is our Ridgecrest Vineyard Old Vine Pinot Gris, which he notes, "Completely outdid my expectations."

When Colin isn't spreading the word of good wine, he can be found enjoying time with his wife, two young daughters, hiking, and reading.

When asked what he loves most about Tryon he said, "I love the attitude of trusting teamwork at Tryon. I've haven't yet had a situation at Tryon where people at all levels weren't willing to help out, and that support has been fantastic."

Jordan Gardner

Beer Brand Manager

Meet our newest Beer Brand Manager: Jordan!

Jordan formerly worked for us as a Wine Brand Manager before relocating to California. But the stars realigned as he sought to move back to North Carolina earlier this year, and he rejoined the Tryon Family in January!

As a Beer Brand Manager, Jordan oversees a portion of our Beer & Innovation Suppliers like MS, ABVC, and Desch. He helps these brands implement strategies on product, pricing , promotions and sales. As he notes, "From our supplier partners, sales, purchasing, warehouse, accounting, and our customers - as a Brand Manager you get your hands in a little bit of everything!"

Jordan's current favorite drink of choice is Squeezy Rider - a new West Coast IPA from our friends at Deschutes Brewing - but notes that he is an occasional drinker, meaning that he feels different occasions call for different drinks. (We humbly agree!)

When asked about his favorite Tryon memory so far, Jordan laughed, "I was sitting in on a supplier review during my first couple weeks of being hired and the joking idea of an incentive trip to Burning Man came up. As laughter and explanations of what Burning Man entailed circled the room, I thought to myself - I have found my people."

When he's not crushing his new(ish) role at Tryon, Jordan loves to be outside - hiking, fishing, playing golf, disc golf, or spending time in the garden. He also enjoys experimenting in the kitchen and complimenting his food creations with beer and wine pairings.

Adrieene Waller

Night Supervisor

Meet Adrieene Waller, our Night Supervisor at our Durham Warehouse. Adrienne has been a part of the Tryon family for a little over 2 years and says her favorite part about working at Tryon is that we are constantly trying out different ways to better the company and its employees. When she’s not busy making sure our warehouse is running effectively and efficiently, you can find her enjoying time with her family, traveling, hanging at the beach, or reading and writing poetry. Thank you, Adrieene for all of your hard work and your commitment to Tryon!

Corey Chambers

Pricing Coordinator

Meet our Pricing Coordinator, Corey Chambers. Corey has been a part of the Tryon family for 7 years now, and makes sure that prices on all of our products are submitted to chains and other stores correctly, so customers are never over-paying for any products!

Corey's favorite Tryon product is the Cavicchioli Prosecco, and when talking about our company he says, "I love the family values that Tryon holds. Tryon operates as a family, working together, willing to help each other out and not look down on one or another. Whereas most companies are strictly 'Corporate America' related. I also love Brad’s motto: Make money while having fun."

When Corey isn't crushing his role at work, you can find him connecting with one of his favorite things - Music. Corey is a musician, and loves anything music-related. He also enjoys movies, bowling, traveling and fishing.

Rodney Plachy

Statewide Manager of Sales & Training Education

As our Statewide Manager of Sales and Training Education, Rodney holds the certifications of Certified Wine Educator and Certified Beer Server. He travels all over the state of North Carolina training our Sales team members, teaching our employees about products within our portfolio, and lending a helping hand wherever it is needed. Rodney has done it all – from visiting Bordeaux and tasting the fabulous 2000 vintage in barrel, to extreme Riesling training in Germany, to cooking Paella for Sales teams during Spanish immersion trainings, to fixing a fallen Christmas tree at 2am during our Christmas Party – we are proud to call Rodney a member of the Tryon Family!

This November, Rodney will celebrate 25 years at Tryon, and when asked what he loves most about working within the company, Rodney said that Tryon supports anyone’s endeavors to go as far as they can. Rodney is a true lover of the outdoors and culture. When he’s not traveling or teaching for work, you can find him biking, hiking, backpacking, skiing, kayaking, reading new books, listening to music, watching movies and/or finding new recipes to cook.
