About MITOLO
Frank’s father Bruno was born to an Italian viticulturist. He arrived in Australia aged 14, with farming in his blood. He brought with him an ethos from his homeland, the Abruzzo region – “forte e gentile” or strong and gentle. Bruno forged a new life in Australia establishing Mitolo Family Farms, a world class fresh produce business.
From a young age Frank began working in the family business. Frank gained much from his father and grandfather – a passion for the land and wine, a love of Italian varieties, and the significance that the soil, location and microclimate contribute to the end product.
Founded in 1999, Mitolo Wines' primary focus is on premium shiraz and cabernet sauvignon from southern McLaren Vale, in particular the sub-districts of Whites Valley and Sellicks Hill. The first Mitolo was produced in 2000 - the G.A.M. Shiraz, named after Frank’s children Gemma, Alex and Marco.
Alongside the foundation wines, Mitolo produces small parcels of traditional Italian varieties well suited to McLaren Vale’s mediterranean climate - a natural expression of Frank’s Italian heritage.
