About CALERA

Calera Wine Company, founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen, is recognized as a pioneer in California Pinot Noir production. Inspired by his experiences in Burgundy, France, Jensen sought out limestone-rich soils in California to establish vineyards similar to those that produced fine French Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This led him to the remote Gavilan Mountains of California's Central Coast, where he found his ideal site in the Mt. Harlan area, at an elevation of 2,200 feet. The winery's name, "Calera", is the Spanish word for "limekiln", referring to a historic limekiln on the property that serves as the company symbol and appears on every bottle.
Calera's Mt. Harlan vineyards are among the highest and coolest in California, characterized by limestone soils. The winery emphasizes a gravity-flow system and minimal intervention winemaking, including the use of native yeasts and whole cluster fermentation, to highlight the unique terroir of the region. While Calera produces Chardonnay, Viognier, and Aligoté, it is best known for its Pinot Noirs. These are praised for their balance, complexity, and age-worthiness, often compared to the style of Burgundy. The winery also produces Central Coast designated wines, sourcing grapes from various top vineyards in the appellation.
Josh Jensen passed away in 2022, but Calera continues to operate under the stewardship of Winemaker Mike Waller, maintaining its commitment to Jensen's vision and reputation for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines.
